Over 300 students escaped unharmed as fire destroyed Brick Dormitory on the night of January 20th. Classes were suspended for three weeks.
Part of the Spencer Residence Hall complex - now called North Spencer - was opened and named for Cornelia Spencer.
Dixie Lee Bryant became the first faculty member to earn a PhD, which she received from the University of Erlangen in Germany.
The first May Day festival was held. Originally this consisted of a musical program.
