Three Cups of Tea by Greg Mortenson and David Oliver Relin
This book has nothing to do with my field of research or teaching, but provides a unique inspiration and a challenge for how we all should use our skills for the benefit of humankind. It is the true and ongoing story of an ex-mountain climber (Greg Mortenson) who was touched by the needs of remote Pakistani villagers for basic educational opportunities, and singlehandedly established a foundation to build and equip schools in this region. Mortenson's amazing story exemplifies how each of us can make a difference in the lives of others and leave the world a better place than we found it if we are willing to make the effort, take some risks, and forge bonds with people from different cultures.
