Translated Woman by Ruth Behar
I've chosen this book because it has provided me with a model of both ethnographic research methodology and an aesthetic writing style which is key to my work in literacy. Behar's study of a Mexican peddler portrays the imaginative storytelling and interpretive skills of a woman without any formal education. The researcher is able to "translate" Esparanza's story for her readers with sensitivity and ethical responsibility.
