The Lives of a Cell: Notes of a Biology Watcher by Lewis Thomas
I chose this book because it is where my curiosity and passion for the work I do really started. There are many other books, manuscripts and essays that significantly shaped my world view, but this book was where it all first came together. The series of essays contained in this book, and the more extensive list of Dr Thomas’ essays published in New England Journal of Medicine and elsewhere, showed me how to combine several of my passions. These passions included a ridiculously intense curiosity about everything and their root causes, philosophy, theology, arts, and the discipline of scientific method for helping us to understand things in a way that is reproducible by others and that can lead to community improvement. The journey continues.
