The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway

I could never have achieved tenure and promotion without the patience and determination I learned from serious fishing. All of these are crucial elements in "The Old Man and the Sea" by Ernest Hemingway. This is not just a fishing story; it is actually a beautifully written parable of life. On a personal level, the old man’s ordeal uncannily mirrors the story of my career at UNCG. During the past couple of difficult years I gained much inspiration and comfort from this book, and I can’t think of one more appropriate for this commemoration.
