This is a beautifully-written account of a remarkable life. Hoggart was a model public intellectual, and this book attempts, with considerable success, to trace the process of his own development and to situate his work and ideas within their social and historical contexts. The opening section on his childhood is perhaps the most moving and important, but the volume as a whole is engaging and thought provoking. Hoggart was a talented writer as well as a critic, and this is significant contribution to contemporary autobiography as well as an illuminating account of a fascinating and necessary life.
