The stories in Pretty Monsters are dark and creative and bizarre, and they’re opportunities to think about the world differently. This is fiction that’s not just an escape, but a question and an adventure--what if? What if you resurrected your dead ex-girlfriend, but she wasn’t the person you remembered? What if your grandmother’s handbag held a whole village, and what if you fell in? What if your mother was a liar and a thief and a murderer ... and a goddess? What if?? When I finished these stories, I read everything else I could by Kelly Link. I first picked up this book based on nothing more than its cover and title. I didn’t know Kelly Link as a writer, I didn’t know she had gotten her MFA from UNCG, and I didn’t know I would later accept a position here. But I’m delighted that I came to UNCG and that I have this opportunity to add one of my favorite books to the collection.
